2014, 5 Channel HD Video, 10 Channel Audio, 4:58
Commissioned for the 19th Biennale of Sydney, March 2014
Winner 2014 Substation Contemporary Art Prize, Newport, August 2014
Winner 2014 Substation People's Choice Award, Newport, August 2014
Exhibited as part of Pleasure and Reality, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, September 2015

Filmed on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour Species of Spaces responds to the monumental materiality of the island with small simple gestures and improvised actions that sound the island’s materials and constructions and then catalogue these actions by type. The island and its objects are read as a kind of score, their shapes and abilities suggest actions and these actions are tested against this materiality, the resulting resonances create an experiential mapping of the varied spaces of the disused ship yard.

The Shakes

2016, Single Channel HD Video, 2 Channel Audio, 25:14
Presented by Liquid Architecture at Long Play Cinema, 2016
Presented at LOG Recordings (Cinema), Christchurch, New Zealand, 2016Shown at The Audio Foundation, Auckland, New Zealand, 2016

Built through a process of structured improvisations, the work explores shaking as a phenomenon mapped through various mediums—sound, machine, body—focussing on the ambiguity of repetitive, obsessive movements that can be read as both symptoms of excitement or anxiety. The Shakes is multi-linear, distributing a single timeline across a number of split screens, which are periodically interrupted and fragmented by other versions of the performance.

Queen Size

2013, commissioned public sculpture.

Queen Size pays tribute to the inner spring mattress; it’s centrality to our lives, its difficult materiality, durability and portability and its soft horizontal contrast to the rigid verticality of the plinth. The plinth project activates an unused plinth in The Edinburgh Gardens, Melbourne that once bore a wooden statue of The Queen of England. Queen Size replaces the figure head of a distant land with something the Australian people know and respect.
